I went into the house of a friend. He said, Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us shut the doors of the temple, for they are coming to kill you—at night they are coming to kill you. But I said, “Should such a man as I flee? I will not go in.” And behold, I saw that God had not sent him, but he made this prophecy against me because my enemies had hired him. He was hired that I should be made afraid and do as he said and sin, that they might have matter for an evil report with which to taunt and reproach me. My God, think on my enemies according to these their works, and on the rest of the prophets who would have put me in fear. Nehemiah 6:10-14
This is a touchy subject, because we don’t want to believe that even pastors, friends, family, and counselors might betray us, but they are all fallible humans, just like us. Nehemiah faced the final attack at the hands of a trusted friend, and even made mention of other prophets trying to get him to sin by giving up his work. This is why you must cling to God alone, and trust in Him to guide you. You must listen to other’s advice, but also weigh their words with God’s plan in mind. If you know that you have been called to wait on your marriage, then someone coming along, no matter how high in the church, or how long you have known them, trying to tell you to give up- you need to pray on whether this was the enemy working through them. Even people who are known to hear from God can be swayed by their own opinions and can “hear” something that is not of God. You MUST be determined to stay the course, no matter how many attacks come, no matter how alienating it is.
Each attack on Nehemiah came from the enemy, no matter who launched it in the flesh; just as each attack that comes your way, no matter who says it, is from the enemy. The enemy uses people to commit his work against us. We must be aware of the source of the attacks in our life so that we know that we are doing the right thing. Since I’ve explained the reason that the enemy even cares about destroying a marriage, then you know that this fight is only because you are working to restore a godly thing. Each individual attack could come at any point in your stand, and from any person in your life. This is why you must be prepared. You must be walking with God through this whole darkness. He will not forsake you.
And I will bring the blind by a way that they know not; I will lead them in paths that they have not known. I will make darkness into light before them and make uneven places into a plain. These things I have determined to do for them; and I will not leave them forsaken. Isaiah 42:16
Then you will walk in your way securely and in confident trust, and you shall not dash your foot or stumble. When you lie down, you shall not be afraid; yes, you shall lie down, and your sleep shall be sweet. Be not afraid of sudden terror and panic, nor of the stormy blast or the storm and ruin of the wicked when it comes for you will be guiltless. For the Lord shall be your confidence, firm and strong, and shall keep your foot from being caught in a trap or some hidden danger. Proverbs 3:23-26
